Deregulation of timber harvesting in Victoria - open letter from RFPG to Labor MPs

Following up RFPG's 29 July submission on the proposed revision of the Code of Forest Practice, we have today written to all Labor MPs alerting them to the 180 degree policy reversal from the Bracks Brumby period regarding the long-term planning provisions of the Code.

The former Labor government made it clear that VicForests' Timber Release Plan (TRP) is a long-term planning tool and that in its planning VicForests ought to be bound by the long-term  planning requirements.

The Andrews government now proposes to explicitly exempt the TRP from any obligations under the Code. This is a major deregulation.

RFPG urges the government to restore the mandatory obligation on VicForests to comply with the long-term planning principles in adopting the TRP.
