Granton on Fire
The artworks which follow were produced by Jill Sanguinetti in the days and weeks following the Black Saturday fire (Feb 7 2009).
Jill and David successfully defended their mudbrick cottage in Granton on Black Saturday (with the help of their neighbours). See Jill's account of their experience here.
See also the beautiful video made by local artist Heidi Trudinger (here). She interviewed several fire victims who had salvaged things from the remains about what happened to them in the fire and the relics that were left. Jill is in it, as is Dave's brother Nick who lost his house at Taggerty and built a cottage out of the burnt remains.
Jill comments, "We knew 10 and 20 years ago that drought and the increased frequency and severity of bushfires is caused by global warming. It is mind-blowing that our government has done nothing, and Australia’s carbon emissions have increased; Eastern Australia is drying out and burning while what is left of wet, biodiversity-rich forests in the Eastern Highlands is being logged out at twice the rate as before the fire."
